About the initiative

SwAM assesses that the environmental status in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea does not achieve good environmental status for hazardous substances and emissions of oil and oil-like pollutants.
See more under measure 41 in the Agency’s Action Program for the Marine Environment Active phasing out of two-stroke engines with carburetors on recreational boats.
Therefore, together with the Swedish Transport Agency, SwAM sees a need for active phasing out of two-stroke engines with carburetors.
In 2022, a pilot project was started with the County Administrative Board of Stockholm as project manager to increase the pace of phasing out these engines.
Båtretur (Båtskroten, Stena Recycling and Sweboat) joined the collaboration to collect and recycle the engines in an environmentally correct way.
The collaboration also includes the Swedish Cruisers’ Club, One Water, the Archipelago Interest Associations’ Contact Organization (SIKO) and the Archipelago Foundation, which contributes with knowledge and information dissemination in existing networks.
The project is funded by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management.
